I've assessed and treated countless people’s chakras using the SPECTRA Chakra Balancing® System. Certain similarities and patterns have emerged amongst them and I’d like to share some of my findings. Let me start by saying, although each individual is different, there are definitely a number of common, almost predictable, patterns that I see over and over. So, let’s dive in!
The first and most common chakra to be off balance is one that I have already written about in detail in my previous posts “Why this chakra gives me so much trouble" and “Energy medicine techniques for dealing with anxiousness, nervousness, or just feeling unsettled”. And this chakra is the Black Chakra, often referred to as “the Foot Chakra” or “Earth Star”. It's probably the most well-know additional chakra outside of the widely recognized 7 chakras. Without a doubt this is the most common chakra that I see people having issues with. And, the reason is: in our modern day and age we are extremely overstimulated making it very hard to stay grounded, which is the Black Chakra’s most major role. Factors adding to a Black Chakra imbalance are caffeine and sugar addiction; excessive mental and intellectual engagement as we process the constant stream of information and advertising being directed at us; and a general bombardment of the senses from electronic devices, harsh artificial lighting, distracting noises and more. My clinical observation suggests a nutritional deficiency of minerals may also be at play. Minerals are desperately needed to keep the Black Chakra chakra strong, support our nervous system, and keep our energy properly grounded. Sadly, minerals are severely lacking in our diets due to modern agricultural practices. Even further compounding the imbalance in the Black Chakra, most people are depriving themselves from an adequate amount of what acupuncturists refer to as “yin activities”. These are activities that allow us to rest, recover, and rejuvenate from the wear and tear of our active lives. These include practices such as meditation, tai chi, various forms of relaxation including massage, enjoying nature, vacation, and just simple rest. These types of activities are imperative for a balanced life. As we settle ourselves and embrace these nurturing experiences, energy will naturally fill into the Black Chakra. The second chakra that I wish to discuss is also, let’s say “offbeat” from the traditional 7 chakras that you may be familiar with. It is the Green Chakra. You may be thinking, oh the Green Chakra, that is the Heart Chakra. This is the common belief, but I disagree. There are actually two energy centers located in the chest, one is green and the other is a light pink. I believe that the light pink energy center is the chakra that relates to the heart, and that the green energy center actually relates to the liver. Before we go into the specifics of why this chakra is often challenged, let’s look at the liver’s role and functions from a couple of different perspectives. From the traditional western approach, we all understand one of the primary functions of the liver is to metabolize and remove toxins and pollutants that enter the body. But, what most people probably don’t know is that Oriental Medicine’s perspective of the liver’s functions is quite different. Oriental Medicine views the primary role of the liver as being in charge of circulating the qi in the body. That’s right, “qi,” or "chi" -- the primordial life-force energy of all living beings. If you are unfamiliar with Oriental Medicine, you may not be aware how vital it is that this life-force energy circulates properly throughout the body. A few telltale signs that the flow is less than optimal include an elevated stress level, irritability or anger, difficulty sleeping, digestive difficulties, and even pain. Let’s get back to the reasons that this chakra is often found in a less than optimal state. First and probably most obvious: we are being bombarded with toxins in modern society. The most direct route of exposure is the food and drink we consume daily (unless you are one of the few who enjoys a predominantly organic diet). Many people drink water that is far from pure. Most use household and personal care products that are full of harmful chemicals. Even with our best efforts, a certain level of chemical exposure is guaranteed with the air we breathe, the surfaces we touch, and even the modern “medicines” that many individuals rely on. Factor in addictions such as drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, and is it any wonder why the Green Chakra might be a little challenged? Now from a Chinese Medicine standpoint, the issue is that the liver is unable to circulate the qi, and it becomes stagnant. Can an excess of toxins in the body hinder the liver from carrying out this critical function? Absolutely! Some other causes of stagnant qi include: a lack of adequate physical activity; sitting in front of a computer or in traffic; having a job or relationship that displeases you; any personal emotional difficulties; even eating rich, greasy, or heavy foods can impede the free flow of qi. Basically, anything that makes you feel constrained, upset, or negative can lead to qi stagnation. Over time, a person may end up just feeling increasingly stuck in more and different ways. This is a Green Chakra issue. It is the liver that is in charge of getting that qi unstuck and moving again. We can assist it by addressing and rebalancing the Green Chakra. It’s no wonder this chakra is associated with natural healing and rejuvenation! So, those are the top two chakras I find myself working with in my practice. Choosing just one chakra as a favorite is a tough call for me. Different chakras have played a pronounced role in my life and my health at different times. In fact, I think I've had every chakra out of balance at one time or another. During some low-points, I’ve seen the majority of them shut-down almost entirely.
Each chakra plays an important and unique role. Many are familiar with the commonly know 7 chakras. Such as the Solar Plexus Chakra (the yellow chakra), relating to the digestive system and our own sense of self and individuality, the Throat Chakra (the blue chakra) representing our voice and our truth, and the Crown Chakra (usually thought to be a violet color) that is thought to give us access to higher states of consciousness. For myself, picking just one chakra is even more difficult because I'm working with 12. I'm very tempted to choose either the white or the gold chakras (both located above the head) due to their lofty and transcendental nature. Indeed, these have some fascinating attributes being the highest vibrational chakras in the chakra energy system. However, I’ve decided to choose the chakra that I found to be in excess when I first started checking my own. By “excess” I mean that this chakra had more energy, and was larger in size than any of the others. Although, being in excess actually represents an imbalance, it does show my natural tendency to give this chakra more of my energy and attention and also reflects my personality well. This chakra for me was the Magenta Chakra. This chakra is one of three that I would consider most closely related to the traditional "Crown Chakra" (along with the violet and white chakras). It's located right at the top or “crown” of the head. For me, the Magenta Chakra represents my own connection and ability to tap into the non-physical realm. This energy is one of creativity and the ability to see things in a more abstract context. Seeing life through this lens allow me fluidity and spontaneity in my day to day and an open mind in the way I view life. It's definitely not an energy center that everyone embraces fully. People that are overly analytical and skeptical in general, limit themselves from the vision and imagination imparted by a strong Magenta Chakra. This high vibration energy center brings me tons of inspiration and, for me, keeps a sense of almost mystical connection to the world I live in. The only way to discover which might be your favorite chakra is to begin working with, and balancing your own! A more comprehensive look at the chakra energy system
The seven-chakra system has been handed down through antiquity, cherished and revered as a roadmap for the esoteric blueprint of the human energy system. The chakras, or energy centers of the body, correlate to the multi-facets of our being, spanning not only our physical state, but also the complexities of our emotional experiences. They collectively serve as a gateway to our spiritual journey as we navigate through the ever-changing mystery of life. The foundational knowledge of the chakras can be traced back to age-old spiritual beliefs found in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism. A model of the chakra energy system that includes only seven major chakras has been widely accepted. The challenge with validating this universal model is that most methods used to work with the chakras are subjective to personal experience. That makes them difficult to analyze and quantify in any useful, systematic manner. Some common methods for working with the chakras include guided visualizations, sound healing therapies, laying-on of crystals, or direct channeling of energy by an individual either for themselves or another person. These techniques are much more experientially based than objectively scientific. Most methods rely on the recipient having an open mind and some level of trust in the process. Many energy healers rely on their intuitive capabilities. These include clair-sentience (an expanded ability to feel), clair-cognizance (an enhanced sense of knowing), and some even clair-voyance (an ability to see beyond what most other people typically see). It would certainly make things easier if we could all rely on these types of gifts. Better yet, if we were all at the same level in our ability to apply them. But, as is true with all skills and abilities, to some it comes naturally and for others they have to work to achieve a similar level of ability. For myself personally, I would not want to go a day without integrating intuitive capabilities into my life and my healing practice. That being said, and as fascinated with energy medicine as I am, I knew there had to be a more systematic approach. In fact, that is the reason I pursued Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as a career. This field of study is based entirely upon the understanding and regulating the flow of energy, known as “qi,” throughout the body. This complete system of “energy medicine” has been developed and refined over the last 3000-5000 years. Additionally, I began studying another healing technique called “muscle testing.” When skillfully applied, muscle testing has proven to facilitate direct communication with the body. Ultimately it was the convergence of these two systems that allowed me to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the chakra energy system. Prior to this I had been exposed to the chakras through various experiences such as yoga, visualizations, sound meditations and various readings on the subject. Although I had practiced less focused forms of energy healing, I had not specifically used chakra healing in my practice. However, the concepts were always in the back of my mind. And so, you may be wondering, how did you go from not specifically working with the chakras at all, to working with all 12? Let me try and explain how this came about. One of the muscle testing techniques I had been trained in allowed me to measure the energy field of the body. I found this absolutely fascinating and very useful in my acupuncture practice. The technique, known as Morphogenic Field Technique teaches how to measure the energy field of the body on all sides. So, you can literally check the field in the front of the body, in the back of the body, on either side of the body, etc. This assessment gave me a really good snapshot of how a person was doing on an energetic level. The size of a person’s energy field is a direct representation of their overall health, well-being, and resilience. While I had learned Morphogenic Field Technique as an assessment tool for nutritional therapy, I actually started applying it to my acupuncture treatments with great success! I began measuring my patient’s energy field on all sides before an acupuncture session. Some patients came in with a large energy field that was uniform in size on all sides of their body. Others came in with absolutely no energy field at all. Still others had varying degrees of everything in between. I’d proceed with my acupuncture treatment, and afterwards measured their energy field again. Almost every patient saw an improvement in the size or balance of the energy field after an acupuncture treatment. For me, this really validated the therapeutic value to acupuncture. Now I actually had a way of both demonstrating and measuring that value! This was a major step for advancing my work with energy healing and developing the SPECTRA Chakra Balancing® System. What came next was a personal challenge. Typically, with acupuncture, you gauge the success of your treatments based on your patient’s reports of decreased symptoms or improved wellbeing. We also rely on taking the pulses or looking at the tongue. But now, I had another very tangible goal: to balance and enlarge the energy field itself. I set out to find the most efficient way to affect that field. To my surprise and amazement, by applying Oriental Medicine theories I was actually able to narrow it down to a single acu-point for each side of the body. That’s right! Let’s say a person came into my office with no energy field in the front. With proper stimulation of just one acu-point, their full-size energy field in the front would be restored. The same was true for all the other sides of the body as well. After about six months of working with this new approach, it dawned on me that just looking at the overall energy field of the body was an oversimplification. Then it hit me: could I measure the chakras in the same way I was measuring the energy field? So, I began thinking about how I might be able to adapt the method I already had for measuring the energy field into one for measuring the chakras. And thankfully, fairly quickly, I was able to devise just such a method. One of the key characteristics I knew about the chakras that physically defined them was their colors. So, I used this as a basis for testing, and, before long, I came up with a method to specifically test the size of each chakra. This new testing method also revealed to me the additional 5 energy centers that I include in my 12 chakra system. It was truly an astounding and empowering epiphany to be able to validate the chakras in this way. But even in the midst of this new discovery, I had just created yet another challenge for myself: could I now identify the acu-points for opening and expanding the chakras in the same way I had the energy field? Of course, I am not the first person to think of using acu-points to activate the chakras. So, with a little research, I began testing out the acu-points that had been touted by others to affect the chakras. Most commonly, these are points located near the physical location of each chakra. But when I tested these points, they made very little, if any, improvement in the associated chakra. So, I continued to apply trial and error and soon I discovered that the same set of points I had used for opening the energy-field worked equally well to influence some of the chakras. And, thanks to Oriental Medicine theory for pointing me in the right direction again, once I had the points for just a few of the chakras, it became apparent how to find the other points. As a side note, one of the fascinating things I found out along the way is how each chakra has a paired chakra. I discovered this by observing how opening one chakra can sometimes affect another chakra. As I have continued to work with these energy centers, my understanding of them, both individually and collectively, has grown and deepened. The system I’ve developed has also grown in complexity yet it’s still extremely streamlined and offers a truly unprecedented method and capacity to work with the chakras. The connections I made applying Oriental Medicine theory were integral in developing this more comprehensive look at the chakra energy system. It certainly raises the question in my mind: did the ancient bearers of Oriental Medicine have a cross-cultural understanding and well-developed method from applying chakra theory? In my opinion, the answer is a resounding, “Yes!” and I’m very pleased to be a part of re-establishing this link into modern day practice. What energy medicine techniques do you use when dealing with anxiety, nervousness, or just feeling unsettled?
Stress. Pressure. Deadlines. Oh my! I’ve worked with so many people to find relief from these common burdens of day to day life and reclaim a sense of inner tranquility. What I’ve found over and over again is that the energy needs to be pulled back down. In this day and age, we are continually over-stimulated and using our brains constantly. This pulls energy up in the body and leaves a person feeling on-edge, tense, and even overwhelmed. Caffeinated drinks day and night combined with daily work and personal stressors all contribute. Add to this today’s high-tech world, bombarding us with harsh light, distracting sounds and intense images, and you have a perfect recipe for sympathetic nervous system dominance. To make the situation even worse, we have a huge deficit of down-time in our busy lives. And, in western society, we tend to neglect calming, “yin” activities such as meditation, tai chi, or rest and relaxation of any kind for that matter. This can leave a person in a state of persistent stress and anxiety. So how do you pull the energy back down? Knowing how to activate the lower chakras is key! In particular, we need to focus on a frequently overlooked chakra known as the foot chakra. The foot chakra is one of the twelve chakras I teach about in my course. It is the lowest chakra in the body and resonates to a black or dark brown color. This chakra helps the rest of the chakra energy system to stay grounded. This grounding affect actually facilitates our ability to hold energy in the other chakras. But, when this chakra is not fully active, our energy can become frenetic leaving us feeling less stable, frazzled and our nerves frayed. I love to work this chakra on clients because it can have such an instantaneous settling effect when full activated. You may be curious about some at-home tips to get started activating this chakra right away. Here are some options: Try some Epsom salts in a warm foot bath. Take off your shoes and socks and place your feet directly on the earth (think of walking in grass or sand, or sitting on a rock). Carry a grounding stone such as Hematite (my favorite), Black Tourmaline, or Smokey Quartz in your pocket. But do be sure to energetically cleanse the stones regularly if you use this option. Exercise - Part of the reason exercise (especially a full-body or lower-body exercise) has such a balancing and calming effect, is that you are actually pulling your energy back down and into the body. So that’s another great option. There are quite a few other options for strengthening this chakra but these should be fairly easy to get you started. If you are having trouble feeling properly grounded or dealing with anxiety, give it shot! Do any of your clients have low energy or chronic fatigue?
What if you could help them instantly… This is becoming all to common, people getting run down and don’t know how to get their energy back. I am sure that most of us have experienced this at one time or another. And, that’s normal if we over-do it physically or push ourselves too hard at work, or with other responsibilities; especially if we don’t make sure to nourish ourselves properly and get the rest we need on the backside. And sure, when life makes unexpected demands on us, it’s gonna take us down a notch. We are even guilty of perpetuating these patterns, by pushing ourselves to go further and harder with caffeinated drinks, expecting we can get by with less and less sleep, and simply not paying attention to our energy. Eventually this can snowball, and people get all out-of-wack. You can see all this directly reflected in the chakras. Being able to measure the size of the chakras, I’ve seen it over and over again. People with low energy and chronic fatigue, have very small chakras. Another way of putting this is that their chakras just don’t have much energy in them. And that makes a ton of sense right. The chakras are where we connect to the universal life-force energy and radiate that out into our own being. They are in essence energy reservoirs; and they can be run dry. And when these start running on low, it isn’t just our energy levels that suffer. Soon the mood and the way our body feels will be affected as well. The good news is, we can replenish them. Sure, there are a number of ways to do this. And anyone who makes a conscious effort to be mindful of their energy and live a healthy lifestyle probably knows a few tricks for doing this: be it the right foods, vitamins, restorative therapies like yoga, and massage, reiki, meditation, prayer, vacation, light exercise…the list goes on and on. But what I love about SPECTRA Chakra Therapy, is that it does it so quickly and effectively. The acu-points that are used make such a dramatic and instantaneous impact. Again, going off being able to measure the size of the chakras, the difference is night and day. These points really do re-establish our connection to the unlimited Universal Life-Force Energy in a Big Way! Speaking personally, there is one chakra that hands-down gives me the most trouble– it’s the Black Chakra also known as the Foot Chakra and sometimes referred to as the “Earth Star.” I just call it the Black Chakra because the color of the energy it radiates is black or dark brown.
This chakra has everything to do with staying grounded. It also relates to “where we stand” and our personal boundaries. For me, the biggest issue is the grounding part. I think I have always been a very energetic guy, definitely an extrovert. I'm very active, inquisitive and engaged. I really need this chakra to be strong to keep me feeling balanced. The thing is, the more energized we are, the harder for us to stay grounded. Here’s an example: I am sure we’ve all been around someone that is over-caffeinated. Their energy is all worked up, chaotic and anxious. They can be super chatty, easily distracted or jump from thing to thing. They may have trouble relaxing or sleeping. In an advanced or chronic state, this person will likely have lots of tension in the upper body (upper back, shoulders, neck, and jaw). They might even develop twitches, tremors and headaches. In this example we can see how caffeine’s stimulating properties can make it very difficult to maintain balance in the chakra energy system. From an energetic viewpoint what exactly is happening here? It's really quite simple, the energy in the body is being pulled up. In this situation, there is relatively too much energy in the upper body and the upper chakras. Now, guess whose job it is to balance that out? The Black Chakra! Being located at or below the feet, its location in the body alone is very indicative of it’s nature and it's responsibility to anchor our personal energy. When this chakra is active, it pulls energy down in the body. This has a settling and grounding effect. The goal when working with the chakras is always balance. With the modern world’s frantic pace, we are constantly bombarded with mental and sensory stimulation. It’s easy to put ourselves in a state where the upper chakras are overworked. Consequently, that makes it exceedingly difficult for the Black Chakra to do its job. We desperately need the balance of a strong Black Chakra in these challenging modern times. The rainbow is a majestic symbol that occurs only briefly in the natural world. Its colors and brilliance express what is normally hidden from perception: the true nature and beauty of light. Just like the rainbow, each and every one of us is an expression of light. This light is stored in the energy centers of the body known as the chakras.
It is our connection to the divine. Unfortunately, as is true with real rainbows, we do not always shine with our full brilliance. Although light energy is the birthright of each and every person, the reality is that we can become separated from it. Whether through physical ailment, a failed relationship, overwork, or substance abuse, any myriad of life’s challenges can deplete our personal light energy. Life has a tendency to leave its mark on us. Over time we learn to accept states of being that are less than the true brilliance we are entitled to. Because most of us have trouble perceiving the full essence of light, we may be dismissive of it. In nature, it is the clouds and rain that allow us to perceive the full brilliance and beauty of the rainbow. Maybe our own dark clouds are beckoning us. Perhaps the dark times in our lives are what we need to help us recognize that the light is waning. Could it be that the difficult times push us to reclaim what is rightly ours? If you ever find that you are not shining as brightly as you know you should, chakra balancing can empower you to reclaim your light in a profound and powerful way. Through the activation of the chakras, you can re-establish your connection to universal life-force energy. It is that same pure white light that represents our own life-force or spirit. As science tells us, white light contains all of the other colors. Each chakra resonates at one of these color frequencies. The chakra energy system as a whole mimics the color spectrum found in the rainbow. We all have the capacity to fill our chakras with light energy. But most people are unaware of how quickly and easily it can be done. Many methods that exist to cultivate this light energy are time consuming and require ongoing practice. But there is another option which instantly activates the chakras using the stimulation of specific acu-points on the body. Let me be honest – I’m not terribly comfortable with self-promotion. That said, I truly feel that there is no other system that can increase our ability to be filled with universal life-force energy as quickly and easily as the SPECTRA Chakra Balancing® Technique that I’ve developed. My technique offers a few different options for activating the acu-points: using essential oils, infrared heat, or acupuncture. My go-to method is applying essential oils. I can literally activate or clear any of the twelve chakras in less than five minutes using this method. This simple technique plugs you back into the universal life-force energy to recharge the chakras. The activation restores the resilience of your personal energy field, and brings you back into a full-spectrum state. As more of our chakras are active and we hold more light energy in our body, our vibrational frequency actually rises. Each color represents a vibrational level. The higher our vibration, the better we feel physically, mentally, and emotionally. This higher vibration spills over into all aspects of our lives including our relationships, our work, our mood and even our motivation to pursue our dreams. At the end of the rainbow, folklore speaks of a proverbial pot of gold… My take is that this pot of gold is a metaphor and represents the realization of one’s hopes and dreams; ultimate success, fulfillment, and happiness. And, I believe this high-vibration state of being, experienced as the energetic vibration of gold, is attainable when we are completely filled with light. I cannot bring you to this high-vibration state alone. But I can show you where to start. Are you ready to begin your journey? WORKING AT A DEEPER LEVEL
Maybe you’re a seasoned holistic health practitioner, or maybe you’re new to energy medicine. Either way, you offer your clients a safe healing space where they can come to release any “dis-ease” they are experiencing. Often, this dis-ease is felt in the physical body as aches, pains, soreness and fatigue; or in the emotional body as stress, worry, or anxiousness. Frequently, its origins are actually blockages on the energetic level, and only come to manifest in the emotional and physical bodies over time. When working with the chakras, we are given the opportunity to better understand these patterns and the progression of dis-ease. This understanding allows us to direct our therapies to yield a greater benefit for clients, and interact with them on a more holistic basis to promote healing at the deepest level. Here are five important benefits of using chakra work for your clients: 1) It helps clients understand deep level blockages that prevent optimal health and wellbeing Many holistic therapies, especially hands-on techniques, open up the flow of energy in the body. By studying the chakras, you’ll develop a greater understanding of these energy blockages and why they occur to begin with. You’ll learn how blockages in a specific chakra affect your clients emotionally, physically, and even spiritually. You’ll also be empowered with practical tools for unblocking this energy at a very deep level. 2) Chakra work directs you to the areas most in need of attention Once you know how to read the chakras, the body will tell you which areas are a priority with a quick and simple assessment. For example, if you identify the foot chakra as being weak, your client will likely feel very ungrounded, possibly suffering with anxiety and insomnia. Maybe they are fatigued from overwork. This often affects the low back and reflects in the sacral or root chakra. If they are very stressed, the shoulders and neck will often be tensed, with the liver chakra likely involved. When digestion is bothering them, look to the solar plexus chakra. No need to guess. Let the body tell you exactly what its priorities are by learning to assess on an energetic level. 3) It validates emotional responses Next time your client has an emotional response during a session, you’ll be able to quickly provide insights. You’ll share the correlations between the emotion and the energy imbalance in specific chakras. Examples include: anger and irritability correlates to the liver chakra and overall tension in the body. Grief or sadness relate to the throat chakra and a need to release past traumas. Overall emotional turmoil connects to the heart chakra. Even more important, knowing how to activate and clear the chakras can have a pronounced impact on healing these emotional burdens. 4) Working with the chakras identifies and clears bad energy, even before it manifests in the emotional/physical bodies Working at the energetic level of the body gives insights to patterns that are developing even before they show up as emotional or physical ailments. Negative or dirty energy in each of the chakras has its own meaning. For example, if you find that the solar plexus chakra has dirty energy (possibly caused by improper food/drink), this will likely lead to an upset in the digestive system. Clearing this negative energy before ailments manifest has a preventative effect. If emotional or physical distress is already present, clearing the negative energy will assist in restoring wellbeing. 5) Chakra work empowers your clients with home-care tips to assist and support specific chakras Simple recommendations can go a long way towards helping your clients experience wellbeing in their day-to-day lives. Once you have identified which chakras need extra attention, you’ll be able to give personalized recommendations for gentle exercises, use of specific foods, colors, crystals, aromatherapy, verbal affirmations, and other subtle tools that bring support on an energetic level. The chakras reflect what is happening deep within the body. Understanding the connections between the energetic, emotional and physical body affords us a gentle and profound way to work holistically and make a greater impact for our clients.
